Build A Bright Future in the Construction Industry

The Building Construction Technology program at Western Piedmont Community College gives you training in basic construction concepts and techniques plus the opportunity to develop skills in areas such as electrical wiring, plumbing, construction materials, HVAC, solar technology, and green building.

You will learn how to read blueprints, estimate costs of construction, and how to manage projects, plus have hands-on training in various styles of construction while you are enrolled in the program

So where can I work?

An Associate in Applied Science Degree in Building Construction Technology from WPCC is a 2-year program that prepares you for an entry-level position in any general construction setting. You could qualify for management positions such as supervisor, superintendent, project coordinator, project planner, estimator, or inspector as your career progresses.

Our certificate programs in carpentry and construction trades provide opportunities to rapidly get skills to find a job or improve your knowledge on specific topics in the construction industry. The Light Construction Diploma is a 1-year program that gives you the basics you need for a job in the construction industry.

    Statistics from ONET suggest that the salary (median to high) range for construction workers in North Carolina is from $17 to $23 per hour, $36,310 to $46,850 per year.

    Programs of Study

    Associate in Applied Science

    WPCC’s two-year program has 68 hours of coursework, training you in the materials, trends, and techniques of the construction industry. You will also study teamwork concepts and other topics to prepare you for advancement in your career.

    Light Construction Diploma

    WPCC’s one-year diploma has 41 hours of classes designed to provide basic hands-on training for the fast-changing career field of light construction in a variety of settings.

    Construction Carpentry Certificate

    The Carpentry Certificate at WPCC features 18 hours of courses covering the basics of construction, including building codes, materials, and blueprints.

    Construction Trades Certificate

    WPCC’s Construction Trades Certificate is made up of 17 hours of courses that introduce wiring, masonry, and plumbing concepts along with other basic construction concepts.

    Basic Electrical Systems Certificate

    15 hours combining blueprint reading, electrical wiring systems, electrical estimating and OSHA/safety/certification. 

    Basic Plumbing Certificate

    The Basic Plumbing Certificate requires 15 credit hours and will provide an introduction to basic plumbing. 

    Green Building Design Certificate

    15 credit hours included courses that cover renewable energy technologies, building science, design concepts and issues to sustainability.  

    HVACR Certificate

    The HVACR Certificate provides 16 semester hours of specific training in heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration technologies.

    Photovoltaic System Technology Certificate

    The Photovoltaic System Technology Certificate features training in the installation and maintenance of solar arrays as sustainable energy systems.
